Hard water and limescale

One of the most common water quality problems in Lithuania is hard water. When hard water is used in the home, limescale deposits can be seen on household appliances, water heaters lose their efficiency, washing with hard water dries out the skin, and more household chemicals are needed.

Water filters are used to soften water, providing soft water for everyday use.

How do water softening filters work?

The principle of operation of water softening filters is based on ion exchange. Hard water flows through a special cationic charge (filler). As the water flows through the cationic filler, the Ca and Mg ions in the water are retained. Ca and Mg ion salts are the main elements that determine water hardness and cause limescale to form. Over time, the special resin that softens the water loses its properties, so it needs to be regenerated. NaCl salt is used to regenerate the water softening filter. It is often believed that water in water softening filters is filtered with salts, but NaCl salts are only used to regenerate the water softening filter, i.e., to restore the water filter’s performance.
