Water softening using the Ion Exchange Principle

Concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in water is the main reason resulting in hard water. They react to soap by forming soap sediments which remain on the skin, clothes and plumbing systems. Due to changes in the pH, this can often lead to infection resulting in irritated skin. We have probably all seen stains on dishes and plumbing systems, i.e. a reminder that our water is too hard. Hard sediments forming on heating elements are poor conductors, therefore the consumption of energy for heating increases. Water is hard or very hard almost everywhere in Lithuania, therefore it is necessary to install a water softening system. If you can see limescale on your faucets or your kettle, this means that your water is hard which is harmful for your home appliances.

It is necessary to perform precise water tests in a laboratory in order to determine which water softening filter to choose. UAB LT Aqua company works all over Lithuania, therefore we are able to come to you to collect a sample necessary for the water tests, as well as provide consultations on site regarding the space required for a water softening filter. We will also perform water tests by delivering your water sample to the laboratory. This will enable us to save your time and money when searching for filters and thinking about which water softening filter to choose.

The water softening process is based on the principle of ion exchange in water. Calcium and magnesium ions, which make water hard, are removed from the water. When water temperature rises, calcium and magnesium carbonates become visible in the form of particles which are deposited on heating elements or other surfaces. Accumulating limescale harms your household appliances and systems (heating elements, mixers, etc.), shortens their service life and reduces heat transfer to water. Softening filters also have a function to pull bivalent iron dissolved in water. Rinsing of water softening filters is carried out according to a set time interval. The amount of water that can be purified without rinsing is calculated and rinsing is carried out only after consuming a certain amount of water. Operating costs include only salt and water. NaCl salt solution is used to renew the filter medium. It is made from pelleted salt and used in proportion to the amount of water consumed.

The water softening filter is usually installed on the cold water inlet to the building. Then water flows through the ion exchange resin, calcium and magnesium ions are held in the medium, and replaced in the water by sodium ions. Properties of the softening filter are restored by periodically regenerating the medium. Depending on the size of the softening filter, the regeneration cycle can take 1-4 hours. It is not recommended to use water during regeneration, as the water will not be softened.
